Packshot vs. lifestyle: which product photos does your shop need

White background or in a setting? Both have a job, but not in the same place. This is how to split your image budget between packshots and lifestyle.

Nearly every online shop wrestles with the same question: how many packshots versus how many lifestyle images. All packshots and you look flat. All lifestyle and you miss product detail at the moment of truth. The right mix depends on where in the funnel the image works.

Packshots: for decisions

A packshot on a white or neutral background does one thing well: show the product as it really is. Colour, shape, label, packaging. On the product detail page that's essential; buyers want to know exactly what they're getting.

For marketplaces and price comparison engines (Bol, Google Shopping) a clean packshot is also a requirement. There clarity beats mood.

Lifestyle: for desire

Lifestyle imagery does something different: it shows how the product feels in use. A cream on a marble bathroom counter, a dress in a summer setting, an interior piece in a styled home. That creates the desire that drives the click.

On the homepage, in ads and on category pages, lifestyle weighs more heavily than packshots. There the choice hasn't been made yet — there you win attention.

The practical split

For a shop with 30 SKUs we usually advise: one strong packshot per product and three to five lifestyle images in different settings. On top of that, a handful of overarching campaign visuals for ads and banners.

With AI product photography you can produce both types in the same week from a single brief. For skincare brands we run a dedicated approach where packshot, texture and setting come together in a single series.
