AI product photography for online shops: when yes, when no

AI product photography can save you a day of work and thousands of euros — but it isn't the right call for every product. An honest take.

More webshops use AI product photography as the foundation for their image production. Logical: it's fast, costs less and there's no studio day to schedule. But AI isn't a golden hammer. For some products it works beautifully; for others a classic shoot is still the better choice.

Where AI product photography really shines

For products with a recognisable shape and packaging — skincare, fashion, accessories, food — AI product photography works very well. We can render the packaging, label and texture faithfully and you get twenty images in two to three days.

The big advantage is variation. The same bottle in five settings. The same dress in three environments. With a classic shoot that takes days; with AI it's a morning of work.

When a real shoot is the better call

For products with very complex interaction — a mechanical watch in motion, a liquid texture rolling over skin, or a dish that literally steams — a real shoot can sometimes be more efficient. Not because AI can't do it, but because the time to make it perfect adds up.

Also: if your brand identity rests on one signature photographer with a specific hand, don't replace that lightly. AI is an extension there, not a replacement.

The practical check

Ask yourself three questions. How many images do I need per month? How often do I want new variants? And does my product sit within shapes that AI reproduces well?

Three yeses? Then you'll win with AI product photography on both time and budget. Unsure? Ask us for a test with a single product.
